What made you decide to open this business?

After selling her previous business, Jan decided to open a new business that was a reflection of her passion. Jan found the lovely house in the heart of Lafayette that is now Living Pawsitively. The charming Chalet was built in 1984 with wood from the nearby Stillwater Mill which dates back to the mid 1700's.

Why did you choose this profession?

Being knowledgeable in human nutrition, it helped her realize that there was a need for pet owners to be aware of the importance of healthy nutrition and holistic options for their pets.

What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you?

Jan uses the products on her own pets, and get results. This enables here to share so much with clients coming from personal experience.

What was it like when you first started?

There were several road blocks in the beginning, in fact the house was purchased but the business didn't open for a few years later, but Jan persevered and eventually was able to create her dream.

What is something most people don't know about the business?

Periodically, Jan invites health professionals to share their knowledge with the public. Recently, Dr. Richard Patton - world renown animal nutritionist, consultant to zoos around the globe, came to speak about pet nutrition, supplements, healthy diet and behavior.
In addition to the food lines, nutrition, supplements, holistic pet care and treats, the store offers clothing, pet travel bags, novelty items and gifts that are all about how we love our pets.

What would your customers say they love most about your business?

The warm, friendly environment. The vast array of products, and the knowledgeable staff. Learning about the importance of notritions for pets, such as probiotics and digestive enzymes.

How do you motivate and encourage your staff?

Keeping them informed about the latest beneficial foods. Vendors come in to do training on the products. It is encouraging to hear from regular clients how their pet's health improves based on changes in food that the staff recommends. While Jan stresses that the staff doesn't cross the line and make medical recommendations as Vets do, they are educated in the benefits of each product and often are able to make suggestions in food that offer nutritional solutions to enhance the overall health of the pet.

What are your goals over the next year?

We will be opening a satellite location nearby. More details will follow.

What were the factors that made you choose this neighborhood?

Jan shops locally, when possible, from vendors that offer nutritious food for pets. Supporting the community is important a key ingredient in contributing to a robust economic environment for the neighborhood.

What are your favorite restaurants in the neighborhood?

The Mohawk House is one of Jan's favorites. They truly serve from farm to table and that is in simpatico to the philosophy Jan emulates personally, and brings to Living Pawsitively.
